unpopular opinion: smart home stuff is just future e-waste

Third time this happened to me: a “smart” device stops working because the company changes the app or shuts down the cloud service. This time a smart plug. A plug. It was working fine, now it is a plastic cube.

I work in IT support and I fix these for other people too. I am starting to recommend normal switches and a timer. Am I wrong?
