Farage wins the Clacton by-election he called himself, in a vote the main parties boycotted

Nigel Farage won the Clacton by-election, declared on Friday, August 14, with 22,239 votes. Holyrood reported that the Reform UK leader had resigned as the town's MP the previous month amid scrutiny of his finances, saying he wanted the voters to judge him. All the main parties boycotted the contest. Count Binface (Jon Harvey) came second with 9,455 votes.

Tendring District Council, which ran the poll, said turnout was 44.37% and that the 34 candidates were the highest number ever recorded for a UK parliamentary election.

Farage did not attend the count. Holyrood said Reform cited police advice about a “credible threat,” though Essex Police reportedly did not advise any candidate to stay away. Farage said voters had stuck “two fingers up” to the “establishment.”

How each outlet framed it

  • Holyrood — the politics: the boycott, Farage's absence, and his return as an MP reopening a standards inquiry into a £5m gift, which he says did not need declaring.
  • Tendring District Council — the official record: turnout and the record field of candidates.
  • The National (UAE) — the scene, in a photo report from the campaign and the count.
  • The Sunday Guardian (India) — the pre-vote picture of Farage ahead against 33 rivals.

What we don't know yet: Holyrood said the standards investigation will resume now that Farage is back in the Commons; its outcome is open.
