Back-to-school shopping lists are getting out of hand!

Just got the list for my daughter's grade 4 class and it has 38 items on it! Specific brands of markers! Three kinds of glue sticks! A $40 calculator for a nine-year-old!

I'm all for supporting teachers (they buy so much stuff out of pocket!) but wow. How does it work where you are? Do schools give a list or just let parents figure it out?
