are music festivals culture or just very expensive mud

Genuine question from someone who plays at a few every summer. I love them, but every year the tickets cost more, the food costs more and the actual music feels like the background to people filming themselves.

Then again, festivals are probably the closest thing we have to a modern village gathering. Strangers sharing a field, singing the same words. That still feels like culture to me.
