'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' opens to $360M, passing 'Avengers: Endgame' for the US record

Spider-Man: Brand New Day took $360 million in North America over its July 31–August 2 opening weekend, according to updated figures Sony released on Monday, ABC News reported. That passed Avengers: Endgame as the biggest domestic debut of all time. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, also took $572 million internationally, including $121 million from China, for a global opening of $932 million.

ABC said it was only the second film to open above $300 million, the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that the whole weekend set a record for North American cinemas at about $430 million. It holds 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.

The National Desk, on Sinclair station KVAL, set the number against Endgame's $357 million, not adjusted for inflation, and against No Way Home's $260 million opening. Dubai tech site tbreak stressed how thin the margin was.

How each outlet framed it

  • ABC News — the global total, China and Sony's reaction.
  • The National Desk — franchise comparisons and the path to $1 billion.
  • tbreak — a $3 million margin that rested on Monday's update.

Where the numbers differ: tbreak noted that Sunday's estimate of $355 million would have left the film second behind Endgame; only the $360 million Monday figure made it the record.
