Halo comes to PS5 with Campaign Evolved: decent reviews, but a series low of 80 or 82

Halo: Campaign Evolved, a full remake of the first Halo's campaign, launched on 28 July on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. VGC reported that the Halo Studios remake, built in Unreal Engine 5, adds three new prequel missions focused on Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson, with early access from 23 July for Premium and Collector's Edition buyers.

Reviews were good but not great by the series' standards. Hitmarker put the Metacritic score at 82, which it said undercuts Halo 3: ODST's 83 as the lowest for a main Halo game, and noted a “Mixed” Steam rating with 69% approval. KitGuru gave the Metacritic score as 80, against Halo Infinite's 87, and called it “one of the lowest-rated entries in the series.”

KitGuru also gathered weak player scores: 5.7 from PS5 users on Metacritic, 3.9 out of 5 on PlayStation and 3 out of 5 on Xbox. Citing analyst Mat Piscatella, it said 2% of Steam players checked out the game on launch day.

How each outlet framed it

  • VGC — what the remake contains and when players could start.
  • Hitmarker — the score as a record low for the franchise.
  • KitGuru — the gap between “decent” critic reviews and low interest from fans.

Where the numbers differ: Hitmarker reported a Metacritic score of 82 on launch day; KitGuru gave 80 a week later. Both agree the remake sits at or near the bottom of the series.
