Budget question: gaming PC or console for a casual player?

Following on from my other post, I'm now considering buying something of my own rather than borrowing my son's old machine. I keep the household books, so I'm thinking about this in total cost of ownership terms, which my wife finds hilarious.

A console seems cheaper upfront, but online subscriptions add up. A PC costs more at the start but games are often discounted. For someone who plays maybe six or seven hours a week, which actually works out cheaper over five years?
