is a dehumidifier actually worth it or is it a gimmick?

Every summer my basement smells like a wet dog that isn't there. Everyone online swears a dehumidifier fixes it, but they also swear by a lot of things.

Anyone have one? Did it make a real difference or is it another appliance I'll be storing in the garage next year?
