Going abroad in August. Do I need a VPN or is that just YouTube ads talking?

Every second video I watch has a VPN sponsor telling me hotel wifi will steal my soul. Going to Portugal for two weeks, mostly using my phone.

Genuine question: is it worth paying for, or is that mostly marketing? I'd rather not subscribe to something I'll forget to cancel.
