New York police to take over Cornell sex complaints as a Netflix film adds to pressure

New York police will now investigate complaints of sexual assault at Cornell University, the state's governor announced, amid a backlash over how the university handled gang rape allegations involving a fraternity on campus. BBC News reported the change on October 30.

Hindustan Times linked the pressure to a new film: Netflix has released Jane Doe V. Cornell, a 36-minute documentary about allegations that a student was drugged and raped at a fraternity house in 2024. Its report said there were growing calls for the university president to resign.

The change hands complaints that the university had been dealing with to law enforcement. Neither outlet named anyone accused, and no charges were reported.

How each outlet framed it

  • BBC News — a policy shift from the governor, driven by public anger at the university.
  • Hindustan Times — the documentary, the 2024 allegation, and pressure on Cornell's leadership.

What we don't know yet: how the new arrangement will work in practice, for example whether students can still choose a campus process alongside a police report, whether it applies to past complaints, and whether other New York universities will be covered. Cornell's response to the calls for its president to resign was not reported.
