Storms over Greece and Turkey: a deadly tornado in Antalya and more heavy rain ahead

Heavy rain and strong winds are set to continue across parts of south-eastern Europe and Turkey over the next few days, as an area of low pressure fuels powerful thunderstorms, The Guardian reports. During an intense storm in Antalya, on Turkey's south-west coast, a tornado killed four construction workers on Tuesday.

Authorities in Greece and Turkey have issued severe rainfall and flood warnings, with a further 100–150mm (about 4–6in) of rain expected this week in central Greece and western Turkey, according to The Guardian. That is more than many places would normally see in a whole month.

Greece's Proto Thema reported on 27 October that half of the country had been placed on a red-code alert as storms raised the flood risk. In Turkey, Türkiye Today reported earlier in the month that Istanbul was bracing for another wave of heavy rain, with officials warning of flooding.

How each outlet framed it

  • The Guardian — the weather system: one low-pressure area driving storms across two countries, and the tornado deaths.
  • Proto Thema — the national alert: half of Greece under red code.
  • Türkiye Today — the run-up in Turkey: repeated heavy-rain warnings for Istanbul this month.

What we don't know yet: how much damage the rain will cause in central Greece, a region hit by deadly floods in recent years, and whether further alerts will follow.
