Fasts, moons and pushy parents: love and marriage expectations in India and China

Two Asian outlets showed how couples and families talk about marriage this week. Hindustan Times covered Karwa Chauth, which it describes as a traditional Hindu festival where married women observe a sunrise-to-moonrise fast without food or water. Its coverage followed celebrities marking the day: Parineeti Chopra broke her fast aboard a flight with husband Raghav Chadha; actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar's husband drew her a moon so she could break her fast in cloudy Hyderabad; and Aamir Khan celebrated his first Karwa Chauth with wife Gauri Spratt.

HT also reported a debate: television actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee defended the festival, saying those who do not believe in it should not spoil others' happiness or bring feminism into it.

In China, the South China Morning Post reported that even Zhang Weili, Asia's first UFC world champion, faces pressure from her parents to get married. Zhang, 37, had said a year ago she was glad her family was not rushing her, but said in a new interview that her parents grew deeply concerned about her love life in the first half of this year and were “pushing really hard”.

How each outlet framed it

  • Hindustan Times — ritual and romance: celebrity couples, plus a dispute over whether the fast fits modern values.
  • South China Morning Post — family expectations: how even a world champion is not spared questions about marriage.

What we don't know yet: Both outlets report personal accounts; neither offers data on how common such pressure or observance is.
