Tokyo's Pan Pacific Open: Rybakina locks up year-end No 1 as Osaka falls to a teenager
World No 1 Elena Rybakina secured the year-end top ranking with a 6-2, 6-3 win over fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday, the South China Morning Post reports. Rybakina first reached No 1 last month by winning the US Open, replacing Aryna Sabalenka.

For the home crowd the bigger story was Naomi Osaka. The Japan Times had celebrated her stylish return to Tokyo with a first-round win, then reported her upset by Mia Pohankova, an 18-year-old Slovak wild card ranked 144th. Osaka started well before her opponent took control.
Each outlet then followed its own players. The SCMP covered the Philippines' Alexandra Eala, who came from behind to beat Australia's Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and said “it took a lot to turn that match around”. ABC News (Australia) reported that Maya Joint's run ended in the quarter-finals, and that Rybakina, the top seed, had withdrawn from the event with injury.
How each outlet framed it
- South China Morning Post — the ranking milestone, and Asia's rising star Eala.
- The Japan Times — Osaka: a stylish homecoming, then a shock exit.
- ABC News (Australia) — the Australian angle: Joint's quarter-final, and Rybakina's withdrawal.
What we don't know yet: how serious Rybakina's injury is, and whether it affects her plans for the rest of the season.
