iPhone Duo screens cracking near the hinge: what's the engineering story here?

Architect here, so I think a lot about stress concentration. The GONOM post on the iPhone Duo says the damage is concentrated near the hinge of the inner display, with vertical cracks and bright lines on the right side, and that iFixit's 3D simulation found damage clustered below a display cable near a central support bar.

That pattern sounds like a classic stress point: a stiff element (the support bar or cable) under a flexible layer that bends thousands of times. In buildings, you see cracks exactly where a rigid part meets a flexible one.

Questions for anyone who knows more about foldables: is this usually fixed by changing the layer stack, or by moving the stiff part? And given that iFixit also rated it the most repairable foldable it has looked at, would a screen swap actually be straightforward, or is the inner display still the expensive part?
