'Supergirl' opens to $38M against a $170M budget as 'Toy Story 5' holds No. 1
DC Studios' Supergirl opened to $38 million in US and Canadian cinemas over the June 26–28 weekend, plus $30 million overseas, reported Fortune. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, cost $170 million and has a 56% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B- CinemaScore. It opened a distant second to Toy Story 5, which took $70 million in its second weekend.
Fortune compared the start with DC's weakest launches: below The Flash ($55 million, 2023) and Green Lantern ($53 million, 2011), and only just ahead of Joker: Folie à Deux ($37.7 million, 2024). James Gunn and Peter Safran's Superman made $618 million worldwide in 2025. It also reported that the film was trimmed significantly after test screenings.
The picture abroad was similar. SBS Star said the film opened second in South Korea on June 24 with 34,939 viewers, then fell to fourth the next day, with 50,083 admissions by June 25, per the Korean Film Council. Pinkvilla estimated Rs 5.5 crore over three days in India, against an expected Rs 7–9 crore, and predicted a box-office failure there.
How each outlet framed it
- Fortune (US) — the budget, the DC flop list and the studio's future.
- SBS Star (Korea) — official admissions and a fast slide down the chart.
- Pinkvilla (India) — trade estimates showing a miss against expectations.
What we don't know yet: Fortune noted DC's next films are Clayface in October and Man of Tomorrow in July 2027; how Supergirl's result affects those plans was not reported.
