World Cup day 15: USA and Germany lose but still top their groups; Japan and Sweden go through
The United States and Germany both lost their last group games on 25 June, day 15 of the World Cup, but both were already through. The AP report carried by the Bozeman Daily Chronicle said the US lost to Turkey in second-half stoppage time in a match that meant nothing for either side, and Germany lost 2-1 to Ecuador, a surprise before the knockout rounds. AP listed Ivory Coast and the Netherlands among the day's winners.
Outlook India gave the details. In Inglewood, Auston Trusty scored for the US inside three minutes. Arda Guler and Orkun Kokcu put Turkey ahead, Sebastian Berhalter equalised after half-time, and Kaan Ayhan won it 3-2 at the end. It was the first US defeat of the tournament, but they still won Group D. Germany still won Group E, and Outlook called Ecuador's win in East Rutherford “one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.”
The Asian sides had a good day. Outlook said Japan drew 1-1 with Sweden in Arlington, Daizen Maeda scoring for Japan and Anthony Elanga for Sweden, and both went through from Group F behind the Netherlands, who beat Tunisia 3-1. Australia drew 0-0 with Paraguay and finished second in Group D.

What we don't know yet: Outlook said Paraguay, on four points, could still go through as one of the best third-placed teams, depending on other results.
