Putin calls Musk a “real genius”: praise for SpaceX, and an uneasy note for Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Elon Musk as a “real genius” and said Russia is in “close” contact with the SpaceX boss, BBC News reported on Wednesday, October 28. The remarks came during a discussion of satellites.

India's ThePrint, carrying a Reuters report, gives more context. Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev told Putin that Russia had put more than 30 satellites into orbit for its own equivalent of Starlink. Putin called this “our first step” and said the next goal was “to move from quality to quantity”. He said Moscow keeps in touch with US partners, including Musk, so that satellites do not “get in each other's way”.

The praise lands at a sensitive moment for Kyiv. ThePrint notes that Ukraine's military relies on Starlink and its military version, Starshield. Earlier this month Kyiv complained of speed restrictions that hindered its drone interception. The services were later restored, and Musk then accused the Ukrainian military of breaking SpaceX's terms.

How each outlet framed it

  • BBC News — the headline remark: Putin's praise and his claim of close contact with Musk.
  • ThePrint — the race and the war: how far behind Russia's satellite network is, and why Ukraine is watching.

Where the numbers differ: Shadayev put Musk's network at more than 5,000 low-orbit satellites. ThePrint says the independent tracker Orbital Radar counts closer to 10,000.
