Capcom's games profit jumps 66.7% on Onimusha and Pragmata, but one hit goes unlisted
Capcom's games business grew sharply in the first half of its financial year. Japan's Automaton reported on 27 October that operating profit in its digital content segment rose 66.7% to ¥52.3bn (about $332m) for April to September, on sales up 70.8% to ¥85.1bn. Company-wide operating profit rose 54.5%.
The new releases did the work. Automaton said Onimusha: Way of the Sword, launched on 4 September, has sold more than 1.7 million copies, Pragmata more than 2.7 million since April, and Resident Evil Requiem more than 8 million.
Eurogamer called it a “golden streak” but focused on a gap in the report.
“But for some reason, Monster Hunter Wilds is absent from the report.” — Eurogamer
Automaton also gave no unit figure for Monster Hunter Wilds, saying only that its sales rose after the Ascendance expansion was announced. The results cover a period in which Capcom released two new games, while older titles such as Resident Evil Requiem, released in the previous financial year, kept selling.
How each outlet framed it
- Automaton — the full set of numbers: profit, revenue and game-by-game sales.
- Eurogamer — the streak of hits, and the one big game left out of the table.
What we don't know yet: how Monster Hunter Wilds is selling now. Capcom has not given an updated unit figure for it.
