El Niño declared: from an Aussie perspective

Interesting that the BoM hasn't joined NOAA and Japan yet. It uses the stricter 0.8C threshold, so it's only 'approaching El Niño conditions' for now.

Down here El Niño usually means drier, and the farmers and fire people in my family start paying attention very early. I'd rather we be cautious than alarmist, but it's hard not to think about the summer coming after a winter like this.
