Do people actually negotiate salary in your country?

In Australia it's sort of expected for some jobs but I always feel awkward doing it! In my first research job I just said yes to the first number and later found out a colleague asked for more and got it!

I'm curious how different it is around the world! Is it rude in some places? Normal in others? Have you ever had it go badly?!
