Retired folks: did you downsize your house? Worth it?

Retired IT guy in Guadalajara. Kids left years ago, I now live in a house with three empty bedrooms and a garden that's basically my full-time job.

Wife wants to sell and move to an apartment. I want to keep it so the grandkids have somewhere to run around twice a year.

Anyone who downsized: did you regret it? Did the money really make a difference, after moving costs and all?
