PSG beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in Budapest to keep the Champions League

Paris Saint-Germain kept the Champions League on Saturday, 30 May, beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. Sky Sports said PSG were the first team to retain the trophy since Real Madrid between 2015 and 2018.

Arsenal led inside six minutes. Kai Havertz finished after a Marquinhos clearance rebounded to him, and Sky noted that he is only the third player, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic, to score for two clubs in a Champions League final. Ousmane Dembele equalised from the spot after Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. In the shootout Eberechi Eze missed, David Raya saved from Nuno Mendes, and Gabriel sent Arsenal's fifth kick over the bar.

TSN said Lucas Beraldo scored the deciding penalty and that the previous 11 teams to lead in a final had all won it. Arsenal, champions of England for the first time in 22 years, were chasing the first European Cup in their 140-year history.

How each outlet framed it

  • Sky Sports — British heartbreak: the missed double, records and player ratings, with Declan Rice the best at 8/10.
  • TSN — the drama: a lucky opening goal, the coin toss and Gabriel's decisive miss.

Where the numbers differ: Sky Sports said Marquinhos' clearance hit Martin Odegaard before falling to Havertz. TSN said it came off Leandro Trossard's shoulder, 302 seconds in.
