How do you talk to kids about news like the Kolkata crush?

Teacher in the US. Normally I'm the class clown of this forum, but one of my students has family in West Bengal and came in very upset this week. The other kids had questions.

How do you talk to children about something like this without scaring them about every crowd, concert or festival? I said something about how rare it is and how people work to keep events safe, but I'm not sure that was right.

Parents, teachers, anyone who's had to do this?
