Suu Kyi's call with her son: why would the military allow it now?
Reading the GONOM piece on Aung San Suu Kyi speaking to her son Kim Aris for the first time in over five years. What I can't work out is the timing.
The call went through Myanmar's embassy in London, and a spokesperson for the military-backed president shared photos. That's not something you do quietly. So who is the audience? Foreign governments? People inside Myanmar? ASEAN?
And her son himself called it a PR move a few days later. Does anyone know enough about the region to say whether this usually comes before some kind of deal, or is it just image management after their election?
