'Sinners' sets an Oscar record with 16 nominations, passing 'Titanic' and 'La La Land'

Ryan Coogler's Sinners received 16 Oscar nominations on Thursday, January 22, the most for any film in the history of the Academy Awards. Al Jazeera reports that it passes the previous high of 14, shared by Titanic, All About Eve and La La Land. Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another is next with 13.

The ten best picture nominees are Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners and Train Dreams. Empire notes that the ceremony on March 15 will include a new category, casting, with Sinners and One Battle After Another both nominated. KPop Demon Hunters received two nominations, for animated feature and for the song “Golden”.

Al Jazeera lists the films and actors left out. Chase Infiniti of One Battle After Another, Jennifer Lawrence for Die My Love and Paul Mescal for Hamnet were not nominated, and Wicked: For Good received no nominations at all.

How each outlet framed it

  • Al Jazeera — the record, the full list and the snubs, plus surprises such as Kate Hudson's first nomination since Almost Famous.
  • Empire — the record as “the most ever received by a single film”, and the first casting category.
  • Gulf News — the Korean angle: fans angry that Park Chan-wook's No Other Choice was left out, with posts such as “No Other Choice missing is a travesty.”

What we don't know yet: a record number of nominations does not decide the winners. Al Jazeera notes that Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo of Sinners were nominated after being overlooked at the Golden Globes, where Hamnet beat Sinners for best drama.
