Commentator phrases that mean absolutely nothing: a collection
I've been writing these down for a while, mostly to distract myself from my thesis. Contributions welcome.
'He'll be disappointed with that.' (He missed an open goal. Yes, I imagine he will.)
'They need to win this game.' (Do they? Hadn't considered.)
'A game of two halves.' (Correct, technically.)
'He's got that in his locker.' (What else is in the locker? I need to know.)
'The crowd will be the twelfth man today.' (The crowd has been the twelfth man every single day since 1888.)
Bonus points for phrases from other sports or other languages. I suspect every country has its own versions.
