Wind+solar beat gas for a month: what the numbers actually say
Ember: April 2026 wind and solar made 531 TWh (22% of global power) vs 477 TWh (20%) from gas. Five years before, April 2021, gas was almost the same at 476 TWh but wind+solar only 245 TWh. So gas stayed flat and clean power more than doubled.
Important caveat, also from Ember: April was the most likely month for this, spring sun and wind and lower heating demand. So it's a milestone, not yet a permanent state. Still, the growth numbers are strong: China 14%, EU 13%, UK 35%, US 8% year on year.
