'The Mandalorian and Grogu' wins Memorial Day with about $100M, but trails 'Solo'
The Mandalorian and Grogu opened at No. 1 over the US Memorial Day weekend, with about $100 million in North America across four days and $163 million worldwide, according to TheWrap. The Disney/Lucasfilm film carries an A- CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 62% from critics and 89% from audiences.
Boxoffice Pro put the three-day total at $81.96 million from 4,300 screens, with a $102 million four-day projection, including $12 million from Thursday previews. Overseas, the film took $63 million from 51 markets, led by the UK ($7.1 million), Germany ($6.5 million) and China ($5.3 million). It called the debut “the lowest opening in the franchise's modern Disney era”, below Solo: A Star Wars Story's $84.4 million three-day start in 2018, but noted its audience score is the best for a Disney Star Wars film.
TheWrap compared it with Solo, which went on to $392 million worldwide, the lowest for a live-action Star Wars film. It noted that viewers under 25 made up 27% of the audience, against 37% for The Last Jedi in 2017, a sign the fanbase is ageing. The holiday weekend overall reached about $219 million, above studio projections.
