Why do some countries vote on Sunday and others on a weekday?

In Japan we vote on Sunday. I always thought it was normal, but my American coworker said they vote on a Tuesday and many people have to go before or after work. Is that true? Why Tuesday?

And which countries make election day a holiday? Does it change how many people vote? I am curious if anyone has numbers.
