Netflix's 10 years in Korea: 80% of subscribers have watched Korean shows
Netflix says about 80% of its subscribers worldwide have watched Korean shows or films, one of several figures it released on Friday to mark 10 years since it launched in South Korea. Yonhap and The Korea Herald both report the numbers, which come from a new website, “Netflix and Korea: 10 Years”.
According to the company, it has produced or co-produced more than 200 Korean titles with over 80 local production companies since its 2016 launch, filmed in more than 100 cities and towns. More than 200 Korean productions have entered its global Top 10 since the rankings began in 2021, and first-time writers or directors led about a third of recent Korean originals.
“Netflix has worked with over 80 South Korean production houses and more than 95,000 staff, cast members and production crew behind the scenes over the past ten years.” — Yonhap
How each outlet framed it
- Yonhap — the local workforce: the 95,000 people figure in its headline, and 122 partners such as dubbing and subtitle studios.
- The Korea Herald — the global reach in its headline, then the domestic market: Netflix had 15.51 million monthly active users in September, ahead of Tving (10 million) and Coupang Play (9.2 million), citing Mobile Index.
Where the numbers differ: they don't, but they are split differently. The Korea Herald breaks Yonhap's 95,000 into more than 25,000 cast and crew and more than 70,000 background actors and daily hires. Both rely on Netflix's own figures; neither cites an independent check.
