Quick explainer: first-past-the-post vs proportional representation

Seeing a lot of confusion after the Welsh results, so here's a short version. Under first-past-the-post, each area elects one person and whoever gets the most votes wins, even with 30%. It tends to produce big majorities from modest vote shares.

Under proportional systems, seats roughly track vote share. Wales just switched to a closed-list version: you vote for a party, and the party's list decides which individuals get in. More proportional, but voters have less say over the actual people. Neither is perfect, they just fail in different ways.
