Umamusume's LA concerts cancelled over US visas: who outlets and fans blamed

Cygames has cancelled the first North American concerts for Umamusume: Pretty Derby, its Japanese franchise that turns racehorses into singing anime girls, because the performers could not get US visas in time. The Japan Times reports that 17 voice actors were due to perform at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater on October 22 and 23, and that the cancellation was announced on October 20.

Kotaku followed the story as it moved. Its first report quoted Cygames saying it had been working with lawyers and promoters for more than six months to secure visas that had not been approved. An update then carried the cancellation and the company's apology.

“We were unable to obtain the necessary visas for entry into the US, so we have come to the painful conclusion that holding the concerts is no longer possible.” — Cygames, via Kotaku

A day later, Kotaku reported that Cygames would go beyond ticket refunds and reimburse cancellation fees, flights and hotels for fans who had planned to travel or were already in Los Angeles. The tour's next stop is London, with dates still to be set.

How each outlet framed it

  • Kotaku — the Trump administration's stricter immigration rules, and fan reactions split between blaming Washington and blaming Cygames' planning.
  • The Japan Times — a wider question: how hard it remains to bring Japanese entertainers abroad “despite surging demand”.

Where the accounts differ: Kotaku linked the delay to US immigration policy, while some fans it quoted said Cygames left the paperwork too late. Neither outlet published a reason from US authorities for why the visas were not approved.
