Super Mario Galaxy Movie passes $800M after a Golden Week debut in Japan
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened in Japan on April 24 and went straight to the top of the box office there, lifting its worldwide total past $800 million. Outlook Respawn said the film took $11 million in its Japanese debut, the biggest opening for an American film in Japan this year, with the release timed to the Golden Week holidays.
Citing Box Office Mojo, Outlook gave the global total as $831.47 million as of April 26: $386.49 million in North America and $445 million from other markets.
Inven Global, writing from Seoul, gave the Japanese figure in yen: ¥1.6 billion in three days. It put the worldwide total at more than $832 million, called the film the highest-grossing film and animated movie of 2026 so far, and noted that it opens in South Korea on April 29. It recalled that the 2023 original made $1.36 billion worldwide and drew 2.39 million viewers in Korea, and described reviews as polarized.
How each outlet framed it
- Outlook Respawn — the Japan debut in dollars and its place among this year's US releases there.
- Inven Global — yen figures, the 2026 ranking and the coming Korean release.
- ABEMA Times — Japan's own scoreboard, counting box office in yen as the run continued.
What happened next: on May 9, ABEMA Times reported that the film had passed 5.4 billion yen in Japan and 138.8 billion yen worldwide, making it 2026's top Western film in the country. It noted that Illumination's Chris Meledandri and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto co-produced the film.
Where the numbers differ: Outlook and Inven Global give slightly different splits of the same total ($445 million versus $446 million outside North America), and slightly different worldwide totals ($831.47 million versus more than $832 million).
