Can someone explain darts to me? Why is everyone so happy?

Flipped channels last night and landed on darts. Big crowd, everybody in costumes, someone dressed as a banana, guys throwing little arrows at a board, and the place went nuts when somebody scored 180.

I have questions. Why do they start at 501 and go down? Why does it have to end on a double? Why is the banana there?

I've thrown darts in a bar plenty of times and mostly hit the wall. These guys look like they could take out a fly at 50 paces. I think I'm hooked, help.
