How do you visit famous buildings without 1000 people in your photo?

Spring is coming and I want to do a small trip to see some architecture (Italy maybe). But every famous place is full of people, selfie sticks, groups with flags.

Do you go very early? Late? Weekday? Is paying for early entry worth it? Please share your tricks, I am tired of photos with strangers heads in them 😅
