Starting to play games at 52 — where would you begin?

My son is grown and moved abroad, and when we video call he talks about the games he plays. I would like to understand his world a little, and maybe even play together online one day. I've never owned a console.

What would you recommend for someone starting from zero? Should I start with a console or a PC? And are there games that are good for playing together over distance, something not too fast?
