why translating political speeches is harder than it looks

I'm a translator in Singapore. Political speeches are the hardest job I do. Politicians use idioms, jokes, double meanings on purpose. If I translate literally, the joke is lost. If I translate the meaning, I add my interpretation.

This is why I like that GONOM news posts show where quotes come from. Every "via" is also maybe a translation.
