Musicians and money: anyone else have wildly uneven income?

I'm a session musician in Kraków. Some months I earn more than my friends in offices, other months almost nothing. Summer festivals are great, January is a desert.

I've tried to smooth it out with a buffer account, but I'd like to hear how others with irregular income handle it. Freelancers, seasonal workers, farmers, anyone. What actually works?
