Why are films so long now?

Genuine question. When did two and a half hours become standard? I remember most films being about 100 minutes. Is it streaming? Is it directors getting more control? Is it that studios think longer means more 'epic'?

I'm not against a long film if it earns it. I just want to know what changed.
