ICE agent kills Minneapolis woman: self-defence for DHS, 'reckless' for the mayor

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, a Minneapolis resident, at about 9:30am on Wednesday, January 7, near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue in south Minneapolis, during a federal immigration enforcement operation. She died in hospital, local station FOX 9 reported.

Federal officials said the agent fired in self-defence: ICE officers were conducting targeted operations when, in their words, rioters blocked them, and the officer fired defensive shots fearing for his life. Axios quoted DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin calling Good a violent rioter who weaponized her vehicle. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected that account, and Police Chief Brian O'Hara said Good was not the target of any enforcement activity. The city council said her life was taken at the hands of the federal government.

FOX 9 described several videos open to conflicting interpretations. One shows a red Honda Pilot partly blocking the road as agents approach; the driver tries to drive away, moving towards an agent, who fires three shots. Witnesses said the vehicle was not moving towards the agents. Hundreds gathered at the site that evening to mourn, and others protested at City Hall. Governor Tim Walz called for calm.

How each outlet framed it

  • FOX 9 — a timeline, the competing readings of the videos, and the protests that followed.
  • Axios — who Good was, through her mother and local lawmakers, set against the DHS description.

What we don't know yet: which account of the videos investigators will accept, and how the strained relations between city and federal officials over the Twin Cities operation will develop.
