Hangul Day: some small facts about the Korean alphabet
October 9 was Hangul Day in Korea, a public holiday for our alphabet. A few things I like to tell foreign friends:
It was created in the 15th century under King Sejong, so ordinary people could read and write, not only scholars using Chinese characters. The shapes of some consonants are based on the position of the mouth and tongue. And many people can learn to read it in a weekend, though understanding is another story, haha.
Happy to answer questions if anyone is learning Korean.
