Kakinada fireworks blast kills 21 in Andhra Pradesh, at a unit allowed far fewer workers

An explosion and fire at the Surya Sri fireworks unit in Vetlapalem village, Samarlakota mandal, Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh, killed at least 21 people on Saturday, February 28, at about 2pm, ETV Bharat reported. Most of the dead were women workers, and 11 had been identified. Eight people were seriously injured. The unit operated across six sheds in a field with no road access for emergency vehicles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each person killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured; Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced Rs 20 lakh per victim and visited the site and hospital.

“We will ensure such a thing never happens again.” — Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, via ETV Bharat

The South First focused on possible safety lapses. Citing sources, it said an estimated 30 to 40 workers, mostly women, were on the premises against a reported limit of 10, that the unit was licensed only for small crackers, and that untrained workers may have mishandled explosive materials during the wedding-season rush; none of this is confirmed. Police registered cases under the Explosives Act, and the state set up a high-level committee to report within 15 days. Canada's CTV News, carrying AFP, ran a brief report citing local officials.

How each outlet framed it

  • ETV Bharat — the toll, compensation and the chief minister's response.
  • The South First — the victims, many daily-wage women, and alleged licence breaches.
  • CTV News (AFP) — a short international wire account.

Where the numbers differ: ETV Bharat counted 34 workers at the factory; The South First gave 30 to 40. AFP reported eight injured; The South First said nearly 10 were in critical condition with about 90% burns.
