My son asked if the Earth 'stops' at the equinox. I panicked and said yes

Yesterday was the autumn equinox and my 8-year-old asked at dinner “does the Earth stop for a second so day and night are equal?”

I was tired. I said “yes, just for a second”. My husband, an engineer, has not spoken to me since.

I have corrected it now. But I'm curious how other parents explain this kind of thing without a diagram.
