Trump threatens Iran with 'hell' at the UN, then calls a three-hour US–Iran meeting 'very good'

Donald Trump addressed the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 22, in a 37-minute speech dominated by Iran. The National reported that he threatened further military action while leaving room for talks, suggested a deal could come after the November 3 midterms, and accused Iran of breaking a ceasefire by attacking shipping. He also urged member states to leave the International Criminal Court, predicted Cuba's government would fall, and celebrated a deal for two US military bases in Greenland.

After the speech, Trump told reporters US and Iranian officials had met for three hours that morning, calling it “a very good meeting” with an outcome of “potential greatness or obliteration.” A Cuban delegation walked out during the address.

How each outlet framed it

  • The National (UAE) — Iran first, plus the Greenland basing deal and Trump's falling approval ratings as the conflict pushes up fuel and grocery prices.
  • Censor.net (Ukraine) — the opening boasts: “While others talked about peace, I forged peace,” with Ukraine coverage in a separate piece.
  • Outlook India — the wider session: Guterres's final address before his term ends on December 31, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas speaking by video after US visa denials, and the race for the next secretary-general.

What we don't know yet: The National did not report an official Iranian response to the speech or to the meeting Trump described.
