Kids' Halloween costumes: homemade or shop-bought? Be honest

My 5-year-old has asked to be 'a scary strawberry'. Not a strawberry. A scary one. There is no shop on earth selling this, so it seems I'm making it.

Part of me loves the idea. The other part remembers last year's homemade robot, which lost an arm before we'd left the street and was mostly cardboard tears by 7pm.

Do you lot still make costumes or have you given in to the £15 polyester tunic? And if you make them, what's your trick for something that survives an actual child?
