BAFTAs 2026: 'One Battle After Another' wins six including best film; 'Hamnet' best British

One Battle After Another won six awards, including best film, at the 79th British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, February 22. Paul Thomas Anderson won best director and adapted screenplay, and Sean Penn won best supporting actor, ITV News reports.

Jessie Buckley won best actress for Hamnet, which was named outstanding British film. Robert Aramayo won best actor for I Swear and also took the public-voted EE Rising Star award. Wunmi Mosaku won best supporting actress for Sinners, which also won original screenplay and original score. Frankenstein won three craft awards, and Sentimental Value was best film not in the English language.

“Let's keep making things without fear, it's a good idea. See you at the bar.” — Paul Thomas Anderson, via ITV News

How each outlet framed it

  • ITV News — the room: host Alan Cumming's “collective nervous breakdown” joke, the Prince and Princess of Wales in attendance, and Mosaku speaking while heavily pregnant.
  • Variety Australia — records from the nominations: Hamnet as the most-nominated film by a female director, Sinners by a Black director, and a performance of “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters.
  • Outlook India — the home angle: Lakshmipriya Devi's Boong won best children's and family film, beating Zootopia 2.

Where the numbers differ: all three agree on six wins for One Battle After Another and three each for Sinners and Frankenstein. But Outlook India counts two wins for Hamnet and two for I Swear, while the Variety Australia live blog marks only one for Hamnet. The film led with 14 nominations, two short of the record of 16 held by Gandhi.
