Quick explainer: what "half of Europe in drought" actually means

Seen a few people read the rivers post as "half of Europe is a desert". Not quite.

The figure comes from the EU Joint Research Centre's drought indicator, which combines things like rainfall, soil moisture and how stressed vegetation looks from satellites. In mid-July about half of Europe's land area was in some drought category, and 9% was at the highest "alert" level, including southern Germany, Hungary, Romania, Austria, Czechia and Slovakia.

So: serious, widespread, worth worrying about. But "in drought" is a range, not one single condition. I'd be careful with the more dramatic headlines.
